Il s'agit de la première traduction parue, destinée à la communauté scientifique internationale. Cesare Lombroso (1835-1909), professeur de psychiatrie, puis d'anthropologie criminelle à Turin, avait déjà fait paraître en 1876 "L'uomo delinquente" (L'Homme criminel), ouvrage qui marque la naissance de lanthropologie criminelle (cf. Printing and the mind of man, 364). Dans cet ouvrage, Cesare Lombroso et son assistant (et futur gendre) Guglielmo Ferrero cherchent à appliquer à la femme les thèses élaborées dans L'homme criminel, à savoir la théorie du criminel-né, avec chez celui-ci des caractères anatomiques et physiologiques distinctifs. Ce vaste ouvrage est très documenté, les auteurs ayant eu recours non seulement à une documentation scientifique considérable (anatomique, anthropométrique, psychologique, biologique, statistique, .) mais aussi à des témoignages, des anecdotes, des dictons, . Ils étudient dans une première partie (pp. 1-188) la femme normale. Ils veulent démontrer l'infériorité des femmes, et arrivent à la conclusion que "la femme est intellectuellement et physiquement un homme arrêté dans son développement" et que toute femme a un fond de perversité. Le reste de l'ouvrage est consacré à la femme criminelle et à la prostituée (la prostitution étant considérée comme un crime). De longs chapitres sont consacrés aux criminelles-nées et aux prostituées-nées. Le dernier chapitre (pp. 620-643) traite de l'hystérie (qui "est spécialement la maladie des femmes" et dont le "caractère le plus saillant est l'érotisme") et des délinquantes hystériques. Malgré ses conclusions qui l'ont fait considérer comme un monument de misogynie, cet ouvrage eut une influence importante et présente un regain d'intérêt avec les études actuelles sur la prédisposition génétique de l'agressivité (interaction gène - environnement).
