Octavo, original vellum, rather worn, somewhat soiled from handling, and with chipping along joints and at one band on spine, inside top joint broken, contemporary hand has neatly inscribed author and title along bottom edge so book can be identified when lying flat on a bookshelf, name neatly inscribed on title, very clean copy internally. Published over a period of years beginning in 1558 with the first three books of his letters, this collection gradually evolved until it reached its final form in 1580 with the publication of all twelve books for the first time. This Venice edition is a very early printing of the complete text. Not in Adams. Rare. Because of the value of this item, extra postal insurance or registry fees may be required.

BUNEL, Pierre, and MANUZIO, Paulo. PETRI BUNELLI, GALLI, PRAECEPTORIS, & PAULAE MANUTII, DISCIPULI, EPISTOLAE CICERONIANO STYLO SCRIPTAE. Aliorum Gallorum Pariter et Italorum Epistolae eodem Stylo Scriptae. Geneva (Henri Estienne) 1581. Octavo. (vii)240(1)319pp. First and only authorized edition. A piracy may have been published in the same year. Estienne woodcut device on title (a philosopher standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge, and the motto "noli altum sapere.") The idea for this book stemmed from a conversation between the printer, Henri Estienne, who was known for his erudition, and King Henri III, the dedicatee. The King had asked why Italy, rather than France, claimed the most and best Ciceronian Latinists. Estienne went away and stewed a while, then described the conversation in Latin verse (quoted by Renouard), and published this comparison of letters written in Ciceronian Latin by Pierre Bunel (1499-1546) and by the great editor of Cicero, Paulus Manutius, son and successor to Aldus. Estienne here champions French Ciceronians, printing the letter in which Manutius admits having learned to write correctly from Bunel, his companion of 40 years (p.111). Bunel's "Familiares aliquot Epistulae," (Paris, Estienne, 1551) was intended for juvenile readers ("in Adulescentiorum Ciceronis studiosorum gratiam"). The second portion, with its own half-title and pagination, contains the letters of Italians such as Longolio and Bembo, and the third, also with half-title, is a group of letters from French Latinists, including King Francis I. In early limp vellum, spine titled in ink. Pastedowns pulling loose; front fly adhering partially to paste-down; light spotting to title, and light marginal dampstain persisting to p.6; browning and corners torn off from pp. x-xi, not affecting text. Covers show age and soil. Small leather library label to spine. (Renouard 1581.5. British Museum 1084 i. 5. OCLC lists 3 copies in the USA).

Condizione: Good. Ad 1: 8vo. Part 1: [1], 2-138, [4] = 142 ff. Part 2: [1], 2-122, [2] = 124 ff. Contemporary limp vellum with "yapp" edges, title in MS on spine, singular "1" at bottom of spine indicating the first of two volumes, small abraisons on free endleaves from leather ties (no longer present). Date of 1742 written next to printer's device on Part 1 title. 2nd occurrence of f. 89 has creased corner, small tear on 2nd occurrence of f. 23. Ad 2: 8vo. [4], 9-214, [6] = 216 ff. Contemporary paper boards, MS number "4247" on spine, singular "2" at bottom of spine indicating the 2nd of two volumes, pasted title in red MS with blue paper border on spine. Title with fore-edge margin extended, final leaf (Register / Aldine anchor on verso) repaired and with margins partially extended. An excellent example of a 16th-century Italian "temporary" binding (no doubt original) which perfectly reveals its construction. The textblock (Lib. 1-2) is sewn onto 4 alum-tawed supports (one at head and tail). As commonly, these straps are laced outside the limp vellum "wrapper" along the joints, and then back inside where they have remained unattached for more than 450 years. There is evidence of two pair of leather ties (one small fragment remains). The bespoke "forwarding" may have been done at the Giglio printshop or by a Venetian bindery closely associated with it. Of additional bibliographic interest are the nine different paper stocks utilized for printing this copy, which are clearly discerned along the lower edge of the textblock. Lib. 3 was printed (and largely written) by Paolo Manuzio (Paulus Manutius); the text is bound in 18th- or early 19th-century stiff boards with pronounced raised joints. In this instance the textblock was sewn on two cords, without endbands. The upper cover is inscribed: "Questo terzo volume accompagna l'edizione del Giglio 1558" suggesting that these two books have been together for many years. The provenance of this set is notable: a sixteenth-century inscription on the title-page reads "Guliani de Eherys" (i.e. Eherus). This is a Northern European (perhaps even Estonian) name, and thus the present volume exhibits the incredibly wide influence of Aldine editions. The armorial bookplate of the Princes of Liechtenstein are pasted inside the covers of both volumes. The text contains correspondence to/from Lorenzo de Medici, Giovanni de Medici-later Pope Leon, Francesco Maria Duca de Urbino, Cardinal Bembo, Michelagnolo Buonarroti, Annibal Caro, Dona Isabetta, Pietro Aretino, Boccaccio to la Fiammetta, and Francesco Petrarca, among others. Paolo Manuzio (1512-1574) is the third son of the famous Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, who assumed management of the Aldine Press following a four-year dispute with his uncles over its operation. Paolo's major scholarly contributions are corrected editions of Cicero's letters and orations, his own epistles (as here), and a Latin version of Demosthenes's "Philippics." Lib. 3 features the famed Dolphin and Anchor printer's device on the title-page and final leaf. Ad. 1: Adams 590. EDIT16 CNCE 25850. Ad 2: Adams 591. EDIT16 CNCE 28241. Provenance: Prince of Liechtenstein Library with armorial bookplates ("Ex-libris Liechtensteiniansis"), and with the Vaduz Castle shelfmark "E.13.25" (crossed out in pencil) in Vol I-II; the library was bought bought en bloc by H.P. Kraus in 1948.

A collection of the celebrated Latin epistles in Ciceronian style by the Venetian scholar - printer Paolo Manuzio (1512-74), third son of Aldo the Elder (1449-1515), founder of the famous Aldine press. The letters, dated between 1558 and 1570, were edited and printed by Paolo s eldest son Aldo the Younger ( Aldus Junior 1547-97) who had succeeded to the family business in 1561, when his father left for Rome to manage the Tipografia del Popolo Romano for Pope Pius IV. Aldo the Younger was a professor of literature who wrote a treatise on Latin spelling. The 3rd part contains Paolo Manuzio s dedicatory prefaces to his redactions of the classics. Indexes at the end of the volume list the names of the 124 recipients of the letters, and the names of the 28 dedicatees of the prefaces. Paolo Manuzio is chiefly known for his contribution to scholarship through his redactions of finely printed editions of Cicero s letters and speeches, for his Latin translation of Demosthenes Philippics (1549) and for his studies of Roman antiquities.
