Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. xlix, 371 pages; bound in publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering and design on the spine and a design embossed on the covers. Former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown "Ben & Mary Glen Chitty", also the stamp of "Braithet Llewelyn Fewster". Mapes was a favorite under King Henry II of England and archdeacon of Oxford who wrote poetry in Latin. He seems to have died in 1210. He is well known to the lovers of Middle Age romance as the composer of an important portion of the cycle of King Arthur of his knights." Some cracking along the inside of the front cover, else a very good clean copy.

Blind-stamped brown cloth. Condizione: Good-VG for age. No Jacket. 1st Thus. xlix+371; 1956-dated sig. to front pastedown, this also has a rectangularwater-stain like mark in the centre but no sign of water damage on facing endpaper or elsewhere, a small unaffected rectangle in the centre of this suggests a label may have been present but no sign of adhesion so it is all rather mystery, a few paper splits to front gutter which have not affected tightness of binding, inner sides of endpapers slightly tanned, otherwise all generally clean, tight and unmarked internally. The covers are generally very clean for age, main flaw is spine ends chipped to textblock level, also a number of minor edge-knocks of little consequence and a few cloth blisters to back. Good gilt spine lettering and large central blind-stamped design to each cover. A very acceptable copy despite faults. Wright's introduction fully discusses some authorship attribution problems and the evidence of Mapes's life - most of which was in 12th century, his death being towards 1210. Much of his verse is satirical and he intensely disliked the Cistercians. Size: 18 Cms x 22.5 Cms.
