Offprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 177-253. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: The victory ode is a curious and somewhat paradoxical form of art. As we know it, from the extant works of Pindar and Bacchylides, it appears to be in the tradition of the songs of the bards and the lyric poets, that is, an address by a single poet to his audience. For example, in the opening lines of Pindar s Second Olympian Ode ("Hymns that rule the lyre/which god, which hero, which man shall we sing ?"), the "we" is clearly Pindar, since the invocation to "hymns" and the first personal verb "we shall sing" indicate that the speaker is concerned with the composition of song, in other words, that he is a poet. But O 2 and most of Pindar s other odes were not presented by the poet himself, as were the songs of the Homeric bards, but by choruses, like the dithyramb and the choral odes of tragedy. One may well inquire if the chorus of the victory ode ever speaks for itself, as do the choruses of comedy and tragedy, or does it always remain a musical instrument, allowing the ode to be sung in the person of the poet? - Mary R. Lefkowitz (born April 30, 1935) is an American scholar of Classics. She is the Professor Emerita of Classical Studies at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where she previously worked from 1959 to 2005. She has published ten books over the course of her career. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 31-38. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: No generation has been more aware than ours of the aesthetics of translation, because no generation has depended on translations more.1 Withdrawn within ourselves, we seem to cope with existence best in our own language. We all admit that much is lost in the process of transmission, yet the disinclination to learn even the most accessible modern languages persists relentlessly. Isolation screens us also from the past. We discern easily in history only what is not foreign to our experience. So we regard the Classics, as through a set of filters, with the quality of light successively altered by changing languages and customs. - Wikipedia: Mary R. Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 173-185. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Rubbed and bumped, back cover stained, otherwise clean. - From the text: The substance of ancient poetry, like the texts of the poems themselves, has reached us only through the mediation of many minds and hands. In particular, the Odes of Pindar have survived inextricably enmeshed in critical opinion, since they required interpretation to be understood even in antiquity, once they had been removed from the original provenance of their performance. In the third century b.c. the text was edited by Aristophanes of Byzantium, and an explanatory commentary was written by Aristarchus in Alexandria. Other scholars, like Aristarchus student Aristodemus, added interpretations; in the first century Didymus wrote a commentary, disputing Aristarchus interpretations on many points. Over the next centuries these scholars contributions were preserved, elaborated, and finally condensed and compiled into our present scholia to Pindar. - Wikipedia: Mary R. Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 187-210. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Binding very stained, pamphlet torn at top but outside of typescript, text very clean. - From the text: Biography can serve as a convenient aid in literary interpretation, explaining puzzling emphases, accounting for an author s choice of subject. It offers a chance to spy on the intriguing mysteries of the creative process and somehow, though perhaps only partially, to reveal its workings. Because biography informs so well about literature since the eighteenth century, readers of ancient literature instinctively search for information about authors lives to interpret Greek and Latin texts, particularly for complex uvres like Euripides which seem to drift until some biographical or historical framework is brought in to anchor them. - Wikipedia: Mary R. Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 209-221. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to Jeffrey Henderson. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: I ought to begin by explaining why I want to talk about this particular ode, which celebrates the victory of Aristomenes of Aegina in the boys wrestling contest at the Pythian games in 446 B.C.1 There are many practical reasons: its date is known, so we don t need to speculate; it s short, so we can read through it in relatively little time and remember what the poet has been saying; and it presents numerous difficulties (challenge is one of Pindar s principal attractions). But in the end none of these reasons truthfully explains why I want to spend time on Pythian 8. I am in fact interested in the ode because of what it says: this is the victory ode that mentions the poet s meeting with a (dead) hero; the poem devotes unusual space to the reactions of the defeated; and it contains the famous (though ostensibly depressing) statement that a human being is a dream of a shadow (95-96) all of which would appear (at least at first sight) to be peculiar means of celebrating a victory. - Wikipedia: Mary R.
