Il volume illustra l?opera di Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), incisore, acquafortista e architetto italiano. Dopo la biografia dell?Artista, il testo, di A. Hyatt Mayor, passa all?esposizione dell?opera di Piranesi: dalle prime opere, alle famose Vedute di Roma, alla serie di vedute fantastiche d?interni delle Carceri d?invenzione, alle incisioni dedicate alle Antichità romane, fino alla creazione di modelli di architettura d?interni e alla creazione di mobili e suppellettili per la decorazione di ambienti. Lo spiccatissimo interesse per la topografia e per il mondo antico costituì per Piranesi lo stimolo maggiore alla creazione della sua ricchissima opera grafica. Con le Vedute di Roma, Piranesi creò uno dei più importanti ed efficaci ritratti di una città mai realizzato; con le sue celebrazioni dell?arte romana egli svolse, non solo in Italia, un ruolo di grande importanza per l?evoluzione del Neoclassicismo.
