Hard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Reprint. 298 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). Map endpapers. Eight b&w plates plus facsimile of first edition (1853) title page - collated. Includes the author's introduction to her novel, "Mark Hurdlestone". "Mrs. Moodie, a refined and sophisticated person by upbringing and inclination, looks, not back, but about her at the relatively advanced society which had grown up in the clearings along the 'front' of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Here we are concerned, not with the woodsman's axe and the primitive struggle against nature, not with the solitary but with social man. Mrs. Moodie is quite sure that this society is in a much healthier condition than the one she had known in England: She associates the improvement with the mixing of the classes in the new society and thinks that the absence of convention and prejudice in the relations between various occupational groups is partly due to a 'friendly' American influence. She likes the greater liveliness in social intercourse, and better still she likes the way in which the stripping away of the old preconceptions makes possible a true estimate of a man's worth which she sees simply as the sum of his native ability, his industry, his moral training and his education." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one crease across spine, very small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edgewear/wrinkling, tiny edge tears and chips - archivally taped, light rubbing, minor soiling.
