Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Royal octavo; hardcover, full cloth with giolt spine titles; 54pp., with a monochrome frontispiece and 12 plates and other illustrations likewise. Mild wear; a little shaken; text block edges toned; offset to the endpapers; previous owner's contemporary ink inscription to the flyleaf; original purchase receipt taped to the recto of the rear free endpaper with associated offset. Dustwrapper is rubbed and a little sunned; now backed by archival-quality white paper and professionally preotected by non-adhesive polypropylene wrap. Very good. The journal of the "Five Days' Peregrination", which Hogarth and a party of his friends composed on their return from a trip to the coast of Kent in 1732, was a rollicking impromptu, never meant for publication. No other comtemporary record gives so lively a picture of the artist and the company he kept. This new edition for the first time faithfully prints the text of the manuscript, now in the British Museum, and it reproduces the drawings of Hogarth, Samuel Scott, and John Thornhill, Hogarth's brother-in-law, from newly made photographs; the book also includes a reprint of Wiliam Gostling's account of the tour in Hudibrastic verse. The Introductory essay is an attempt to set the manuscript in its original context: the editor draws biographical sketches of the travellers and defines their journal as a burlesque on antiquaries, to which Hogarth made satirical additions which throw fresh light on his state of mind at the time he launched the "Harlot's Progress".
