Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: New. First Edition. From Library JournalThese are two complementary and insightful works on the history of migration. Moch, author of Paths to the City: Regional Migration in Nineteenth Century France (Sage, 1983), builds on her earlier work by focusing on the intracontinental movement of peoples in Western Europe. She presents a strong argument against the idea of a sedentary Europe, examining four time periods from 1650 through the 20th century to demonstrate that geographic stability was a privilege few people could afford. This approach allows her not only to trace the connections between historical events and population mobility but to place the process of migration in a social context. A particularly worthwhile facet of Moch's work is her emphasis on gender as a factor in migration. Moving to intercontinental migrations, Nugent (history, Univ. of Notre Dame) presents a global analysis by discussing migration as it affected both North and South America as well as Europe from 1870 to 1914. Within this uniquely holistic approach, Nugent emphasizes fertility and mortality as a reason for migration, with secondary emphasis given to economic considerations. Consequently, his book is much more grounded in statistics than Moch's, which may limit its appeal to more specialized readers. Beyond statistics, Nugent devotes an interesting if brief chapter to the idea that the United States was an exception to other New World receiving nations. Both books are readable and well researched, making ample use of foreign-language primary sources, and they offer unique contributions to migration studies. Recommended for informed readers.- Daniel Liestman, Seattle Pacific Univ. Lib.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.Product DescriptionThe migrations, voluntary and forced, that overran the New World following the Age of Discovery and reached their high-water mark in the years before World War I make up only part of the story of European migrations. During the same period, millions of people in Western Europe were on the move as well. Moving Europeans tells the story of these vast population movements as it examines the links between human mobility and the fundamental changes that transformed European life.Leslie Page Moch describes the changing face of Western European migration from the preindustrial era to the modern day. She focuses on the changing patterns of work, landholding, and population in rural and urban areas, placing them in the context of the social and political forces that helped to shape human migration. She looks at a broad range of issues, from gender and family practices to the regulations of nineteenth-century nation-states, and details the different experiences of men and women, of the propertied and the proletariat, as she fills in important gaps in our understanding of human mobility. From the Back Cover'Moving Europeans' tells the story of vast population movements as it examines the links between human mobility and the fundamental changes that transformed European life.
