XX [From the flaps] Many people have defined the eighties as the decade in which style triumphed over substance, but Ray Petri's work under the Buffalo label was, in many ways, the antithesis of what was dubbed the matt-black designer decade. Like the magazines The Face, i-D and Arena, which showcased Petri's work, Buffalo was far more logically a product of the DIY post-punk aesthetic than it was an embodiment of the self-consciously slick careerism of much eighties image-making. Buffalo was, first and foremost, about a certain kind of hip, urban attitude. And you never had to spend money to acquire attitude. Buffalo quietly defined the look of eighties youth culture, and this legacy of an uncompromisingly urban style has since inspired legions of designers, stylists, and photographers who were never part of the gang, but absorbed and understood the images and references and made them their own in cities the world over. From the simple combination of the ubiquitous MA-I flight jacket and an old pair of Levi's (invariably Ray's own uniform) to the rarified clothing produced by cutting edge designers, Petri's legacy of style and the Buffalo stance is still alive and making its presence felt on the biggest catwalk of them all: the street (Kate Flett). XX Ray Petri was a creative artist in the truest sense. His vision survives him in fashion pages, through the stylists and photographers inspired by his work, in chain store racks of designer rip-offs, on the backs of every hip young thing in high streets across the world (Dylan Jones, Editor, GQ). XX Ray had an eye for a certain type of guy, pretty but rough; he made it OK for straight boys to pretty themselves up. I remember him as a very sweet, upfront, cool man, just breezy like a jazz musician. I still have one of Ray and Jamie's pictures stuck on my fridge, the one of Nick Kamen in white boxers with a bandage over his eye. Talk about horny (Boy George) XX Ray Petri had an innate understanding about beauty and sexuality. His images still hold up today. They played with and pulled upon old masculine archetypes, and they managed to do that rare thing of being iconic without just being about surface (Debra Bourne, Arena). XX Fashion really is about styling; that was Ray's talent. In his own way Ray was a genius; he left his own mark (Jean-Paul Gaultier, Designer).
