Dietrich Wilhelm Heinrich Busch, "einer der berühmtesten Professoren der Geburtshilfe Deutschlands in der ersten Hälfte dieses Jahrhunderts, wurde am 16. März 1788 zu Marburg in Kurhessen geboren. Er entstammte einer Professoren-Familie, denn bereits sein Grossvater Johann David Busch (1755- ) und Vater Johann Jacob Busch (1727-1786) hatten als Professoren der Medicin an der Universität Marburg gewirkt. Seine Studien trieb und beendete er in seiner Vaterstadt und wurde am 4. Juni 1808 von seinem eigenen Vater promovirt. Schon früher hatte er, vom November 1806 bis August 1807, im französischen Lazarethe freiwillig als Arzt Dienste gethan und ebenso im Lazarethe der polnischen Legion vom December 1807 bis März 1808. Er betheiligte sich an dem Aufstände, welcher, vom Freiherrn von Dörnberg gegen den König von Westphalen Jerome Napoleon organisirt, gleich nach der SCHILL'schen Erhebung in Hessen ausbrechen sollte, um die Fremdherrschaft abzuschütteln. Die Verschwörung wurde aber verrathen und dadurch im Keime erstickt. Mehrere Theilnehmer wurden ergriffen und erschossen, darunter Busch's Freund Professor STERNBERG, während Busch gewarnt, mit anderen Genossen Zeit fand, zu fliehen. Er hielt sich durch einige Monate hindurch im Kölnischen Sauerlande bei einem Oberförster versteckt. Bald darauf wurde er amnestirt, namentlich deshalb, weil er früher freiwillig Dienste in Militärhospitälern gethan hatte. Von nun an diente er unausgesetzt in französiseh-westphälischen Lazarethen, bis Oetober 1813 durch Einrücken russischer Truppen das ephemere Königreich Westphalen von der Landkarte verschwand. Er übernahm dann das russische Lazareth. Januar 1814 wurde er zum Generalfeldmedicus bei dem Generalstabe (oberster Feldarzt) der in das Feld rückenden hessischen Armeecorps ernannt. Da er sich von der Chirurgie abgewendet und vollständig der Geburtshilfe gewidmet hatte, bekam er 1820 die Professur und Klinik der Geburtshilfe. 1829 erhielt er nach ELIAS VON SIEBOLD'S Tod einen Ruf als Professor der Geburtshilfe und Vorstand der geburtshilflichen Klinik nach Berlin, den er auch annahm. Hier wurden ihm viele Ehren und Auszeichnungen zu Theil. Literarisch war Busch sehr thätig.
