In total there are 180 full page engraved views and plans each with tissue-guard (60 per volume) and this set is collated complete CONDITION: The bindings are in fine and very sturdy condition, all of the page leaves are very slightly tanned but otherwise in fine condition as are almost all the plates, though about 16 of the plates in volume one have large patches of tanning or foxing mainly in the margins (tissue guards and text leaves are completely unaffected). Robert Garland made the sketches for this work while the historical text was produced by Thomas Moule. Henry Winkles is given credit for the works on the title page. Winkles (1801 - 1860) was an English architectural illustrator, printer and engraver, who while very influential in Britain also founded the first steel engraving studio in Karlsruhe, Germany along with Karl Ludwig Frommel. The volumes are illustrated with ground plans and wonderful engraved views. Vol 1: xx, 144pp, Frontispiece & 60 full page plates. Including chapters on Canterbury cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral, and Oxford Cathedral among others. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with new endpapers. Volume III was rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Minor cracking to the rear joints of volume I, with a minor horizontal tear to the cloth to the spine. Publisher's slip tipped in to the front free endpaper of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the leaves of plates, although, generally, the pages are bright and clean throughout.
