Aunque se ofreció a otros bandos -belga, francés, alemán-, acabó enrolado en el ejército turco y comandando un cuerpo de choque que le granjeó altos honores militares e incluso le permitió tener su propia guardia personal. Cuatro años bajo la Media Luna, publicado en 1924, es, entre otras muchas cosas, una crónica de avatares de este "caballero andante" a lo largo y ancho del frente turco durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Al trote de su periplo, acompañamos a Nogales por la estepa de Anatolia, el Cáucaso, Mesopotamia, Siria, Persia, Palestina, los Santos Lugares mahometanos, el Sinaí egipcio. mientras se codea con todos los personajes implicados en el alto mando otomano y alemán en cada uno de los frentes en que participó. Especialmente recordado es su paso por el frente del Cáucaso y su participación en el sitio de Van, donde fue testigo de los desmanes del ejército turco con la población armenia, y respecto del cual mostró su completo desacuerdo con el mando turco, dada la crueldad de los hechos y su propia condición de cristiano. Hoy este libro se considera uno de los testimonios más tempranos y de primera mano de lo que se conoce como el "genocidio armenio", del que Nogales hace un crudo relato.
