[From front jacket flap] This dramatic story of divine and human love is the tale of the Prophet Hosea and his beautiful and restless wife Gomer. When the old prophet, Amos, dies, his mantle falls upon the half-unwilling shoulders of Hosea, who is compelled thereafter to sacrifice his personal life to his God-inspired mission. When Gomer, feeling rejected, seeks fulfillment elsewhere, and Hosea is confronted with her infidelity, this story of two strong and passionate personalities in conflict mounts to its inexorable climax. THE VALLEY OF GOD is an extraordinary and richly textured re-creation of Biblical times, Biblical lands and Biblical people. Mrs. Patai demonstrates from the outset a complete and comprehensive knowledge of her subject and background, but she never allows this knowledge to intrude upon the sweep of story and the play of character. Although THE VALLEY OF GOD is an historical novel in the best sense, the passions and conflicts that engage and fill the lives of its characters are as basic and dominant in human beings today as they were in the time of the Prophet.

Hardbound. Light green boards with a black spine and BW pictorial DJ, [ix] 438pp, 46 BW illustrations. Encounters is a remarkable re-creation of the several worlds of one of the greatest masters of modern sculpture. Over an interval of two years, Irene Patai shared the intimacy of Jacques Lipchitz' thoughts in innumerable conversations. In addition to her comprehensive research, she has talked with his personal friends and professional associates. Although this authorized biography is based on scholarly adherence to fact, the story has the inexorable sweep of a coursing river. VG, DJ shows some wear but has been encased in clear plastic laminate.
