Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

Oblong quarto. 104 pp. being primarily taken up with monochrome plates after Phippen ( a few in color). Publisher's full tan calf with gilt cover and spine lettering, light brown endpapers, slipcase with laid down color plate after Phippen. Mild rubbing to slipcase, else a fine copy.George Phippen, a western artist from Skull Valley, Arizona, is the co-founder and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America. Phippen did approximately 3,000 works in his brief career. Succumbing to cancer in 1966 (at age 50), he made art for only 20 years. He was a sculptor and painter in representational style of western genre, figures, and horses. He is best remembered for his bronze sculptures such as ??Cowboy in a Storm??.
