Moderate cracking to hinges, with exposed netting repaired with tape, pages are loose. Pages and plates have light tanning and foxing throughout. Tears to some page edges, text remains unaffected. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Water staining to both boards. Wear marks overall.

Eight illustrated plates, including frontispiece portrait of author. xiii, 108, [2] pages. Thomas Percy Gleave's memoir, recounting his experiences in the RAF 1939-1940 as commander of 253 Squadron, his participation in the Battle of Britain, his encounters with German aircraft, and getting shot down. He describes his severe injuries and relates what happened to him in hospital, including his reconstructive surgery (he was one of the first patients of plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe) and recovery.

A reading copy of this account of World War II from the outbreak of war to the moment in the Battle of Britain where he crashes in flames. Illustrated with a few b/w photographs.
