Prima edizione Copia autografata
First US edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Joe and Anne Slater who so valiantly try to bring the world nearer to destination peace. With every good wish. Gideon Rafael New York, May 1981". The recipient was Joseph E. Slater (1922-2002), President of the Aspen Institute, and his wife Annelore (1918-2012). Joseph had a long career in international affairs. He worked on the Four Power Allied Control Council to manage post-war Germany, and in 1948 he worked with the US State Department to help form the United Nations. In 1949 he was named Secretary General of the Allied High Commission in Germany and afterwards was US representative to Nato and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In the 1950s he held other posts promoting international co-operation and, with the election of John F. Kennedy, wrote the blueprint for the formation of the Peace Corps. He became President of the Aspen Institute in 1969, revitalizing the institute as a centre for world leaders and scholars to work on international issues. The Israeli diplomat Gideon Rafael (1913-1999) was one of the founders of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1957 to 1977 he served as ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, the UN, and the United Kingdom, among other roles. Destination Peace begins with the proclamation of Israel's independence and the hasty formation of its Foreign Ministry, through to the establishment of the country's position in the world, its struggle with hostile Arab neighbours, and the numerous wars and international crises that marked the nation's history. The work was also published in the UK and in Hebrew in Jerusalem the same year. Octavo. Original white quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, red paper-covered sides. With dust jacket. Jacket a little toned with minor chipping at extremities, slight soiling, unclipped: a fine copy in very good jacket.
