Seine Arbeiten reichen bis in die Zeit vor dem ersten Welt krieg zurück, als er in einer eigenen kleinen Werkstatt an einem selbst gebauten Motor die Vorgänge im Brennraum zu studieren begann, behindert durch die Unvollkommenheit der Versuchseinrichtungen und durch den Mangel am Wichtigsten, was zu solchen Versuchen gehört, am Geld.
