unbound. Condizione: near fine. Fine content T.L.S. 4to. 2 pages, Naval Airstrip and Experimental Command, Lakehurst, New Jersey, January 31, 1946, to the newspaper editor at the Boston Globe, in small part: "the airships which operated from South Weymouth during the war were units of the Atlantic Fleet, and hence not directly under my command". Currently, with the very drastic reduction in the airship organization following V-J Day, there are no blimps operating from South Weymouth. the only airship squadron left on the Atlantic Coast now bases at the Naval Air Station, Lakehurst. I am glad to see that the committee confirmed what we air shippers have always realized. the advantages possessed by the airship for slow, deliberate inspection of the surface from a low, elevated platform." Prima edizione Copia autografata
First Edition. Signed presentation copy fro Lt.-Comdr, Charles E. Rosendahl to Lt. Comdr. Frank ÔSpigÕ Wead, inscribed by the author: ÒWith best wishes to ÔSpigÕ Wead in recognition of all the contributions he has made to aeronautics in spite of great odds. C.E. Rosendahl. 28 November, 1931.Ó Illustrated. Very good lightly used copy in a lightly dust soiled dust jacket which has some chipping and creasing with the largest effecting the lettering at head of spine. ÔSpigÕ Wead was an ace pilot in the U.S. Navy just after World War I, greatly contributing to the development of the NavyÕs aviation programs. After an unfortunate accident in which he became paralyzed, he became a writer of novels, stories, and screenplays, including West Point of the Air, China Clipper, Sea Devils, Moon Over Burma, etc. His biographical history Wings for Men served as the inspiration for the great John Ford film The Wings of Eagles starring John Wayne. The front panel of the dust jacket of this book has a wonderful painting of a dirigible air ship soaring above its hangar. A terrific book detailing the history and development of airships in the United States.
