Born in Virginia in 1811, he was appointed by Andrew Jackson to be Territorial Governor of Michigan in 1835 at the young age of 24 and helped guide Michigan to statehood in 1837. He was then elected to be Michigan's first Governor, serving until 1840. He died in Detroit of pneumonia only three years later. Contains Genealogical Notes, Bibliography and an Index in the rear. The blue cloth spine is sunned, and there is a light scratch to the rear cover, else a generally good, tight and clean copy with a previous owner bookplate on front free end paper. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 447 pages.

As territorial governor, Mason was instrumental in guiding Michigan to statehood, which was secured in 1837. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected as Michigan's first state Governor in 1835, where he would serve until 1840. Elected at age 23 and taking office at 24, Mason was and remains the youngest state governor in American history as of 2016." Not Price Clipped.
