Salieri's Armida, a dramma per musica with libretto by Marco Coltellini (1724-1777), was first performed in Vienna on 2 June 1771. Watermark of a six-pointed star.

(Berlin, Im Verlage der Rellstabschen Musikhandlung, [1790]). Salieri's La Cifra, a dramma giocoso with libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749-1838), was first performed in Vienna on 11 December 1789.

Erstausgabe der deutschen Fassung. - Die erste deutsche Fassung kam 1790 auf die Bühne und stellte keine simple Übersetzung von Da Pontes Einrichtung dar: Vielmehr wurden in die aus Rezitativteilen gewonnenen Prosadialoge aus dem französischen Original wieder eingefügt. Schmieders sehr geschmeidige und getreue Übersetzung wurde vom Nationaltheater Mainz erstmals in Frankfurt am 14. August 1790 gespielt (WP). Der Bearbeiter Neefe war u.a. Hoforganist in Bonn und dort auch Lehrer Beethovens.

Axur, to a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte after Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais's libretto Tarare, was first performed in Vienna at the Burgtheater on 8 January 1788 in celebration of the marriage of Archduke Franz, Joseph's nephew. "Axur was an immediate and lasting success. It was said to have been Joseph's favourite opera, and it found favour with the Viennese public as well. With 100 performances between 1788 and 1805, Axur was one of the most often performed operas in the Viennese court theatres during this period. Many performances in Germany, mostly in German translation, attest to its popularity during the last decade of the 18th century and the first decade of the 19th." John A. Rice in Grove Music Online Christian Gottlob Neefe (1748-1798) is best remembered as Beethoven's first important teacher.
