Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Binding and dust jacket in good shape. Fairly heavy foxing on the top edge of the book, less on the side and bottom. Dust jacket flaps (inside) are also a bit foxed, but nothing unusual for the age of the book. The pages of the book are all very slightly curved in the middle, creating a small hump/arch that prevents the boards from closing entirely flat. The curvature creates a space of maybe a couple of millimeters between board and page edge. Nothing drastic. My thought is that the book was in a fairly humid environment for a bit and got a little swollen, though I hesitate to speculate so. At any rate there are no apparent signs of water damage or mold, no spots or smells.

Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Illustrated by Satenstein, Harvey (illustratore). First Edition. Signed and inscribed by Translator and Editor Seymour B. Liebman [1907-1986] atop half-title. "Poetic beauty and religious fervor flow from the memoirs and letters of this young Jew of Mexico City who was burned at the stake on December 8, 1596, accused of secretly practicing forbidden Jewish rites. These documents and his spiritual Last Will and Testament are starkly moving witnesses to a dark period in the social history of that part of New Spain that is now Mexico." - dust jacket. "The only known extant writings by a Jew in Mexico during the Spanish colonial period, 1521-1821, are the memoirs, letters, and will written during 1595 and 1596 by Luis de Carvajal, el Mozo (the Younger)." - Foreword. "Professor Liebman has not only carefully translated these valuable documents, but has also provided them with detailed notes, a fine introduction, and an epilogue. In these well-documented pages, he has been able to bring back to life the record of an extraordinary personality and his family - I believe that not only scholars interested in American and Jewish history but also many general readers will find much thought-provoking material in this collection." - Salo W. Baron. "Utterly unique." - Cecil Roth. pp.[8]-157. Selected bibliography. Index. Fifteen illustrations. Two genealogical tables. Book virtually as new. "Twenty years of research in the original Inquisition documents in the Vatican archives and the national archives of Spain, Portugal and Latin American nations resulted in this first full-length book on the Marranos, or secret Jews, of Latin America and the Caribbean Islands up to 1825. This fascinating account explores the social history and religious aspects of the lives of the Jews who lived in Mexico, Peru, Columbia, Brazil, and Argentina in the threatening shadow of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. Flamboyant leaders, daring exploits, communal relationships, superstitions, sex customs and food habits pursuant to rabbinical injunctions, and religious observances and prayers are revealed in narrative form." - dust jacket.
