Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. 228 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)ecounts the global voyage, and the efforts to uncover the fate, of a hero of 18th century Pacific exploration long familiar with Australians and Europeans, but little known in North America. Count Jean Francois de Galaup, de La Perouse, (now called Laperouse) had a distinguished naval career, serving in the West Indies, Mauritius, the Indian Ocean and North America. He defeated the British off Louisbourg and captured forts York and Prince of Wales on Hudson Bay. His scientific expedition in 1785 rivaled, in popular interest, the space voyages of today. The expedition rounded Cape Horn, sailed north to Chile, Easter Island, and Hawaii, and then explored and charted the coast of today's Alaska and British Columbia. They made their way south to San Francisco before sailing across the Pacific to Macao, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. They charted the Tartary Coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula, the farthest outpost of the Russian Empire. Turning south again, they made for Botany Bay via Samoa. On March 10, 1788, the Boussole and Astrolabe headed north and disappeared. Despite several search parties, it was not until 1827 that evidence of one of the wrecks was discovered by an Irish sea captain named Peter Dillon. It was only in 1962 that Reece Discombe, an expert in underwater salvage, found the flagship. Archaeological teams from Australia, France and Vanuatu continue to probe the wrecks to this day." Old tape residue marks at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small bump at bottom of spine, tiny dents on top & bottom edges of boards - soiling also on bottom edges, small bump to top corner of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, one very small tear archivally taped, light edge wrinkling - most at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
