Estratto. Condizione: Gut. pp. 43-59, 8 fig. Dalla biblioteca del Prof. Wolfgang Haase, editore di lunga data dell'ANRW e dell'International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). Condizione: Gut. pp.106-122. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name underlined on first page, otherwise clean. - From the text: Much of what still shapes our discussion of Heliodorus s extraordinary Aethiopica flows from two seminal articles published in 1982, by John Morgan and Jack Winkler. Both called attention to the remarkable interest the author took in the polyglot nature of the novel s world and to the problems of translation or mutual incomprehension which that polyglot world entailed. While Morgan emphasized the role Heliodorus s portrayal of translation difficulties played in fashioning a realistic affect for the novel s narrative mode, Winkler saw the same comments primarily as further evidence for the hermeneutic comedy of the novel s complex narrative and the perpetual problems of interpretation. It would be easy but unhelpful to play up the differences between these two approaches: Winkler s formulation was more eye-catchingly postmodern and has consequently gotten much more play in subsequent discussions, but it is clear that the two narrative effects are by no means mutually exclusive. More recently, Judith Perkins has argued for a performative notion of identity in the novel, suggesting that Heliodorus offers a model for dual identity. Appealing as this model is, I believe that the novel s representations of translation, both in its successes and failures, demonstrate that not everyone translates or is translated as well as the heroine Charicleia. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: It is unfortunate that for the fifth century, the most fertile period of Greek drama, we have scarcely any reliable information about actors and acting conditions. According to traditional accounts it was in this period that poets ceased to act in their own plays. The men who replaced them, though little more than a handful of names to us, represent the first step towards the great guilds of the Artists of Dionysus in the Hellenistic period. I propose here to use two pieces of Attic relief sculpture, both from the end of the fifth century, as a window into the social history of the theatre in this informative era. Only one of these pieces has received full publication and discussion. I shall therefore deal in some detail with questions of style, date, and iconography to provide the basis for further observations on the changing rôle of theatre and the people of the theatre in fifth-century Athens. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name underlined on first page, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: The birth of New Comedy is accompanied by a simultaneous transformation of both physical and imaginative space in the Greek theatre. This transformation ratifies and gives presence to a number of internal transformations of comedy in the century between Aristophanes and Menander. The New Comedy which emerges is both physically and imaginatively detached from the city which gave it birth. This detachment in turn is the source of New Comedy s remarkable endurance as a form: it becomes mobile, even universal, as it is carried throughout the Mediterranean world by the great Hellenistic acting companies, the Artists of Dionysos. In this form New Comedy impinges upon the Roman mind and theatrical tradition. Plays of the New Comedy repertoire are transformed by Plautus and others into Latin versions conceived for a new physical space. In the hands of Plautus a new dimension of imaginative space comes to the fore as well, but Terence and other Roman writers return to Greek conceptions of space. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name underlined on first page, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: At first glance the visual arts would seem to be of less importance in Apuleius Golden Ass than in the Satyricon of his Roman predecessor Petronius. While the works of art owned by Trimalchio and those in the gallery Encolpius visits are occasions for Petronius to play with the experience of viewing art and indeed form part of a wider critique of mimetic realism as a standard for judging works of art, there is no similar attack on realism per se in Apuleius. And yet few works of literature are as obsessed with the problems of seeing and being seen as The Golden Ass. On one level, then, an examination of the process of viewing works of art offers both a case study in a more general issue in Apuleius and a point of contact with the wider tradition of the ancient novel, for ecphrasis in its modern, more specialized sense of descriptions of works of art has recently attracted a great deal of attention in both the novel and poetry.
