The publication is a collection of 16 poems by modern dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis. The work was taken from a series of evening performances and gatherings her held at her own Ruth St. Denis Theatre Intime, Hollywood in June of 1952. Forward by Aubrey St. John. Publishers seahorse imprint on the final page. Wrappers sunned along the spine and the edges of the covers, with a light water stain on the front cover. Binding slighyl loose at the staples. Interior with some light smudges and a small closed tear along the right edge of the front free endpaper. Wrappers in good, interior in very good condition overall.

Ruth St. Denis (1879 - 1968) was an early pioneer of the modern dance movement in America, and founded the Denishawn dance company with her husband Ted Shawn. Some of her more celebrated pupils included Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, and silent film star Louise Brooks. She published an autobiography in 1939 titled ÔAn Unfinished Life.Õ.

Jacket edges rubbed with shallow, chips and creases. Old cello tape repairs to jacket verso. Please see photos. Poems reflecting the eastern mysticism that inspired St. Denis, a pioneer of modern dance. She embarked on a solo career in 1905; in 1915, Los Angeles, she co-founded the Denishawn School of Dancing with Ted Shawn. In 1927, when they opened a New York branch, illustrator Ruth Harwood became an intimate member of their troupe. Indeed, St. Denis credits Harwood for editing her poems. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.

framed. 7.5 x 9.75-inch photo of St. Denis dancing outdoors in a large flowing costume -- no place, no date, but signed with the number "151," perhaps indicating it is from 1951. Faint creasing at the edges of the photo, but still in very good condition. Matted in white and set in a black wooden frame measuring 13 x 15.25 inches. Modern dance pioneer and teacher who co-founded the American Denishawn School of Dance.
