Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Lady Stanly (1855-1926) was an accomplished engraver, illustrator and genre painter who studied with Bastien-Lepage. In 1890 she married Sir Henry Morton-Stanley, the famous explorer and author. Her work, familiar to many readers of magazines in Victorian Britain, led to this wonderful work. For some years she had felt concern at the plight of 'ragamuffins' as she called them, children who lived and worked in the streets. The resultant book was published in an edition of 5000, and it quickly sold out. When yo look at the quality of these engravings, and the beautiful printing, you can understand why. There is a small obituary notice attached to the top right of the title page, which gives the date of Dorothy Tennant's death. The drawings are surrounded by a subtle colour surround, which gives the impression of a coloured mount. It is very nicely done indeed. The three edges of the text block are brightly gilded. The two colour linen binding is clean considering the age of the book. This is an attractive and collectable copy.
