Condizione: new. (Hardcover, 1956). 1956 1st edition. 8vo (135 x 211mm). Pp222. B/w photographs plates. Library binding - Red boards, blue ex-libris stamp to upper board, spine titled in blue. Re-bound but tidy ex-library copy, new front end-paper. Slight browning but good-plus in chipped and frayed dust-wrapper. C.T. Stoneham wrote a novel called Game Track & Rifle, in which family tragedy and ensuing poverty cause Clifford Denley to leave his minor public school early in search of work, travelling to Kenya in search of employment as a professional hunter. From Hobo to Hunter is Stoneham's autobiography which covers very similar ground, although the real-life Stoneham went to Africa via Canada, where he failed utterly to improve his lot. A great read. .

Originally published under the title 'Wanderings in Wild Africa.' Notable rubbing to the book edges. Slim tidemarks to vertical cover edges. Contents are tanned and occasionally mottled but do remain clean and legible. Occasional tidy annotations to the margins. A reading and reference copy and a scarce edition.

Original Green Cloth Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Third Impression. 1932. Third impression. 286pp., 34 black and white illustrations plus an 8 page catlogue at the end of the book. Charles Thurley Stoneham (18985-1965) was an author, naturalist and big game hunter. Born in India, he attended school in England but ran away to seek adventure in Canada and the USA at the age of 17. During the First World War he spent time in British East Africa and later settled there before moving to Kenya and South Africa. This book is described as "a record of the adventures and impression of a nomad in constant touch with nature and all its changing aspects, in a country interesting and romantic beyond most. The author is one of the very few examples of the professional hunter capable of describing his experiences with facility and understanding of the practised novelist." The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and some patchy damp spotting on the rear board. There is a very small hole in the cloth on the rear board. The bottom corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the half-title page and last page of the catalogue. There is an inscription dated 1932 on the half-title page.

(Hardcover, 1933). 1933 1st edition. Small 8vo (128 x 195mm). Ppx,214 + 8pp publisher's catalogue. Not illustrated. Brown cloth, upper board and spine titled in black. Owner's name to front end-paper, cloth slightly stained, some browning but good copy. Lacks dust-wrapper. More exciting tales of African adventure. This is one of Stoneham's scarcer books. "In these stories I have tried to give information about the lives of African beasts and the men who hunt them. The tales are presented in the form of fiction, in accordance with the taste of the author and the public, but in all but one instance the habits and adventures of animals and men coincide with personal observation and authentic report. The exception is the story 'The Bear of the Nandi,' which is purely imaginary, for no white man has ever seen the creature which causes such terror among the inhabitants of Nandi and Lumbwa, and natives' accounts of it are contradictory and legendary." Chapters include:- Companions of the night; Disputed meat; A bad memory; One glorious hour; War in the reeds; The slayers; Hunted!; The oryx bull; The bear of the Nandi; Hours of shadow; Repayment in kind; Jino-Moja; The perilous night; The savage of thorn and sand. .
