FIRST EDITION. 4to. 10.5 x 8 inches. 179 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. A little wear to extremities and slightly sunned spine. Spotting of fore edge, extending into a few margins, but otherwise a very good copy. 1939 gift inscription on third free endpaper. Loosely inserted: 1988 obituary of Robin Tanner. Illustrated by 6 pages of etched plates, including frontispiece and by numerous text figures of pen drawings. Plan endpapers. The first of four collaborative books on nature and the countryside by Wiltshire husband and wife couple, Heather and Robin Tanner, married in 1931. 'An epitome of some of the villages of north-west Wiltshire. The book is to be regarded as fiction rather than as local history; but, like all fiction, it is based on fact.' 'Kington Borel' is largely an amalgamation of their home village of Kington Langley and the neighbouring parish of Langley Burrell. The four sections cover the village itself, the crafts, the village year and the people. Heather Tanner (1903-93), teacher and writer, campaigned for peace and social justice in the post war years. Robin Tanner (1904-88), was a teacher, artist, etcher and printmaker. RURAL LIFE WILTSHIRE SOCIAL HISTORY VILLAGES 20TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED RURAL LIFE.
