Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. 0 (illustratore). Second Russian edition (first Russian edition published in the US); 8 1/2 x 6; pp. [6], vii-x, [2], 5-259, [5]; plain, black cloth over boards with gilt title; fuchsia top stain; very minor wear to tips of spine and corners; near fine condition. White DJ, printed in purple and black; a few minor nicks to edges; very light, general wear; very good to near fine condition."King, Queen, Knave" was written in 1928, in Russian, and published the same year by Slovo in Berlin, under the pseudonym V. Sirin, while Nabokov was living in Germany. It was not until 1968, when his son Dmitri translated and published the novel into English, with significant corrections and changes by the author. This second Russian edition, "First Edition in the United States of America," was released a year later. The plot revolved around Kurt Dreyer, a wealthy Berlin businessman, his wife, and a young relative of Dreyer's, who had come to work for Kurt, had an affair with the wife, and conspired with her to kill the husband. Being Nabokov's second novel, it was very favorably received and its success, in fact, helped Vladimir and Vera pay off all their debts. 2.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A rare true first edition in book form of Nabokov's third novel - published by the émigré publishing house Slovo as "The Luzhin Defense" in Berlin in 1930. The novel was originally serialised in the Russian émigré quarterly 'Sovremennye zapiski' in 1929-30. The novel wasn't translated into English until 1964 under the title of "The Defense". ***A very good copy - originally published in card covers, this copy has been rebound in a later half-leather binding, with brown spine and black and brown mottled boards. There are no titles on the binding. The original card covers have not survived the rebinding, and the preliminary leaves including the half-title have also been lost. The title page remains intact, with some paper reinforcement on the reverse. The gutter between the first two printed pages has also been strengthened. Internally, the book is complete, with no significant creases or tears. There are some sporadic light stains on some of the pages, but these are mainly in the margins and do not significantly affect the text. A well preserved example of a fragile production. ***234 pages plus a single sheet publisher's advert bound in at the back of the book. 210mm x 140mm. ***The provenance of the book is stated in pencil on the new front free endpaper as 'From the library of Avenir Nizoff, Edmonton, Canada' - Nizoff was an émigré pianist who amassed a large collection of Russian works, covering art, history and literature. ***'"The Defense" (also known as "The Luzhin Defense" - "Zashchita Luzhina") is the third novel written by Vladimir Nabokov after he had immigrated to Berlin. In the foreword to the 1964 first English edition, Nabokov states that he wrote "The Defense" in 1929 while he vacationed in Le Boulou ("hunting butterflies") and then finished it in Berlin. He links the events in the central chapters to moves as encountered in chess problems'. ***'In the foreword to the English translation, Nabokov wrote "of all my Russian books, "The Defense" contains and diffuses the greatest 'warmth', which may seem odd seeing how supremely abstract chess is supposed to be'. (Wiki) ***A very scarce pre-war Vladimir Nabokov first edition title, published under his pen name of V. Sirin - the third of Nabokov's novels to be published by Slovo in Berlin before the Second World War. The book presents well in the attractive binding, with the contents of the book well preserved in original condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First edition; small 8vo (20.5 x 14.5); 259pp., iii, ink ownership inscription to upper flyleaf, slight age toning but very fresh internally; original grey wrappers printed in blue and red, spine toned, some slight wear but otherwise a near-fine copy. Nabokov declared in the foreword of the 1967 English translation of King, Queen, Knave, 'of all my novels this bright brute is the gayest. Expatriation, destitution, nostalgia had no effect on its elaborate and rapturous composition'. The novel is set in Berlin and is centred around the love triangle of a young German man Franz, his uncle Dreyer and Dreyer's wife Martha. The author would later study his American compatriots in detail but it was not the case for his representation of German characters in his writing. Despite having lived in Berlin for a number of years he 'spoke no German, had no German friends, had not read a single German novel either in the original or in the translation'. However, he believed that 'in art, as in nature, a glaring disadvantage may turn out to be a subtle protective device'.
