Hardcover. First Impression. Demy duodecimo, [15.5cm/6.2inches], full Mystic blue pictorial cloth, sans dust jacket, pp. 147. Illustrated with b-w halftones and pen & ink sketches; glossary subsequent to text. Lightly, -and quite comfortably-, worn on extremities, [i. e. corners]; otherwise in exceptionally good condition. A little gem of a book. . The monthly Rudder Magazine for Yachtsmen was first published in 1891 and ceased publication in June 1977. The magazine s founder and first editor, Thomas Fleming Day, born Somerset, England in March 1861, died 19 August 1927 at his home in Harlem, New York, was working in 1890 as a boat salesman for a shop on Dey Street in New York which also produced a catalog of nautical wares. His employer thought that "getting out a little paper" and charging for advertising space would be more lucrative than producing all those free catalogs. Mr Day obliged. 1st Edition. Hardbound 8vo (about 8'' to 9.5'' tall) 272 pages. Index, notes. map endpapers. Description: Includes three maps and eleven b&w illustrations. This deals with a major feud that troubled American science for over a decade after the Civil War. Silliman, a noted mining consultant and cofounder of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, reported abundant evidence of oil in California. The existence of a store of mineral wealth other than gold claimed urgent attention in 1865 when rich placer deposits began to diminish. But Josiah Whitney, head of the California Geological Survey, discounted Silliman's findings with outspoken contempt. Silliman was not vindicated until many years after his death, and the dispute eventually involved even the National Academy of Sciences. BINDING/CONDITION: charcoal gray cloth with gilt spine text; a Near Fine book, with a Near Fine dust jacket; the dust jacket is price clipped. ISBN: B0006BWBPK.
