Winters, Erastus [Militaria] [American Civil War] [Memoirs] Manuscript of Union Corporal Erastus Winters' Memoirs This is a rare, handwritten, partial manuscript of what the author deemed "the missing chapter" from his Civil War Army memoir published in 1905. It consists of 21 hand numbered 9" x 6" leaves (pencil writing rectos only) and is in very good condition with just a touch of light dust-soiling, a bit of edge wear, a couple folds (not affecting any text) and a few faint creases. Erastus Winters was born in Ohio on August 8, 1843. He enlisted in the Union Army as a private and served in the 50th Ohio Infantry during the American Civil War. At the Battle of Franklin, fought in Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864, Winters was taken prisoner by Confederate forces. He was held as a prisoner of war in Cahaba Prison, Alabama. He rose to the rank of corporal before the end of his service. While on his way home from the war in March 1865, Winters was among the passengers of the Sultana, a steamship which exploded, killing more than 1,700 passengers. Winters survived and went on to write several articles about the ordeal. He was also active in veterans' organizations. In 1905, he published "In the 50th Ohio Serving Uncle Sam," recounting his experiences during the war. The manuscript on offer here originates from when Winters was constructing his memoirs, and decided to add in this chapter about his duty in Tennessee and the people he met there in 1864. They include Winters' handwritten transcriptions of letters from the front and offer a thrilling personal foray into his and others' experiences during the Civil War. The anecdotes range from the cheeky ("One thing Tennessee can boast of is her pretty girls - and many of them are so attractive that they will draw many a Yankee boy back here when this cruel war is over") to the heart-wrenching (".we can see the effects of the war; pleasant homes have been broken up; farms have been deserted; fences and other property destroyed. People of the North would hardly know there is a war going on.but down here the war has been brought right to the people's doors.") They contain his own opinions ("my impression is that the people in this part of Tennessee were loyal - and they have suffered more during the War thus far than any other class") as well as historical points of reference ("I suppose Sherman has opened the campaign. If so, look out for stirring news.") Fantastic recollections of a noted Civil War corporal. Williams College holds a collection of nine full letters and three fragments of letters written by Winters, and Duke University holds a 160 pp. ledger he converted into a scrapbook, primarily filled with newspaper clippings. Three institutions hold his published memoirs, and an archive of his wartime letters, collected books, pamphlets, scrapbooks, ephemera and regalia sold at auction for $6,500 in 2008.

Large 12mo, 242 x 138 mms, pp. 12, paper wrappers (soiled and frayed), title, author, publication, within crooked border, no title-page (none called for), stitched as issued; a bit knocked about, but a fair to good copy of a very curious item. The author was a well-known historical figure. Born in New York State, but later prominent in Indiana, Erastus Winter Hewett Ellis (1815-1876) was the son of Dr. William Robinson Ellis (1784-1839), the "Dr. W. R. Ellis" mentioned on the cover of the book. In The History of Elkhart County, Indiana (1881), Erastus W. H. Ellis, when still living, was celebrated as "one of the most notable citizens" of the county (pp. 935-938, p. 935). After his death, the Indiana Magazine of History published his memoir from manuscript, titling it, "An Autobiography of a Noted Pioneer." Interestingly, in his poem, apparently written when he was 15, "The Indian's Lament," Ellis sides entirely with the Indians, the First Nations. Some poems touch on Ellis's father or grandfather serving with General Washington in the Revolutionary War. No copy in WorldCat, COPAC, KVK, British Library, or Library of Congress. There is no copy in Columbia University Libraries (CLIO), New York University Libraries (BobCat), or NYPL. It is also not in the Library of the American Antiquarian Society. , and here, . The former source seems to suggest that it was his father who served under Washington; the latter appears to suggest it was actually his grandfather.
