Hardcover, no jacket, brown with picture of a horseman, title on spine, in darker brown. Some bumping wear on the corners and spine; one small chip on the foot of the spine. Bump on the upper edge of the front cover. Purple-tinted top edge is faded in spots. Upper corners from the first to page 100 have light water stain. Pictorial endpapers. The front ones bear a name-stamp of a previous owner. Pages are clean, free of marks or damage (page 271 has a fingerprint, though.) 280 pages, lightly age-yellowed. Mini-deckle fore-edge. The uncle disappears, with only his donkey returning carrying a saddle bag and a gold-flecked jacket. 280 pages with illustrations.
