Extremities worn, and fly leaves lightly browned; otherwise a very good clean ex-library copy with class no. on spine and neat label on front pastedown. Illustrated by facsimiles or reprints of original title pages and by text figures. Decorated by head and tailpiece vignettes, by initials and by title page device. The contents of this selection of sixteen Later Stuart Tracts in the English Garner series, include original texts by Sir William Petty (1623-87), on Political Arithmetic (1690), a famous work on economics, which advocated the principle of 'laissez-faire,' by government; sixteen texts by Daniel Defoe (1697-1715), including The History of the Kentish Petition (1701), and five satirical texts featuring John Bull by John Arbuthnot (1712) These tracts were reprinted from the English Garner by Professor Edward Arber (1836-1912), with the addition of Defoe's Preface from The Review. Arbuthnot (1667-1735) was a physician and satirist, who was linked with Pope and Swift in the Scriblerus Club founded in 1714. First edition thus, in three volumes with illustrations by Jack Yeats. lxvii, 342pp., frontispiece and 4 illustrations; viii, 319pp., frontispiece and 2 illustrations; xvi, 328pp., frontispiece and 2 illustrations. Top edges gilt. These volumes contain Daniel Defoe's story of the Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, together with the two sequels. Complete in themselves, they are part of a sixteen-volume edition of the Romances and Narratives by Daniel Defoe that was edited by George Atherton Aitken (1860-1917). The three volumes are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The spines have faded to a light brown colour. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the free endpapers, half-titles and last pages. The free endpapers are browned and there is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper of each volume.
