Jahrhunderts war die vor- und frühgeschichtliche Archäologie in Deutschland an ihre interpretativen Grenzen gestoßen. Die auf hohem wissenschaftlichen Niveau durchgeführten Forschungen, denen wir die Vorlage von Materialgruppen sowie weitgehend gesicherter Chronologiesysteme verdanken, war überwiegend von antiquarischen Ansätzen geprägt. Vom eigentlichen Forschungsauftrag der Archäologie als einer (kultur-)historischen Wissenschaft, nämlich geschichtlichen Zusammenhängen unter Zuhilfename aller zur Verfügung stehenden wissenschaftlichen Daten näher zu kommen, war man häufig abgekommen. Den angelsächsischen Modellen, die Hypothesenbildung auf meist geringer Fundbasis betrieben, öffnete man sich nur zögerlich. Dem fachfremden, aber interessierten Laien standen somit nur zwei Möglichkeiten offen: die Betrachtung der europäischen Vorgeschichte auf der Grundlage einer nur geringfügig am Material orientierten Forschung oder aber der Zugriff auf eher journalistische Arbeiten. In dieser Sackgasse wurde die prähistorische Archäologie Nutznießer aus der Weiterentwicklung einer Reihe von Nachbarwissenschaften, deren neueste Forschungsergebnisse die Möglichkeiten des Faches Archäologie außerordentlich erweiterten. Dies gilt vor allem für die Biowissenschaften. Spielte früher höchstens die klassische Anthropologie mit ihren Angaben zu Alter, Geschlecht und Krankheiten eine Rolle, so war es nun erstmals möglich, mittels alter DNA Verwandtschaften, ja sogar Familienverhältnisse aufzuklären. Die in diesem Band besprochenen Eulauer Gräber sind hierfür ein beredtes Beispiel. Darüber hinaus konnte damit begonnen werden, mögliche räumliche Bewegungen von Menschengruppen, ja sogar die Ausbreitung ganzer Tierarten im Neolithisierungsprozess nachzuvollziehen. Die Isotopenforschung ermöglicht es uns, nicht nur Aussagen zur Herkunft zu treffen, sondern sogar die Bewegungsmuster einzelner Individuen - zumindest für ihre Kindheit - nachzuzeichnen. Letzteres lässt sich über die Isotopie der Zähne mittels der Laser-Ablation-Technik nachweisen. Kulturgeschichtlich von außerordentlicher Bedeutung ist der Nachweis von Ernährungsgewohnheiten.
