Condizione: NEAR FINE. First printing. A book which chronicles the life and Prohibition-era times of this legendary songwriter and whose musicals pioneered a distinctive African-American musical theater on Broadway, but who has been almost forgotten. "The 1920s were thrilling years for Broadway and Tin Pan Alley. Uptown in Harlem, talented musicians and composers were working to shed the image of minstrelsy and to find mainstream success within the structures of that particularly African American music known as jazz. The subject of this biography was lyricist for hundreds of songs, including 'Honeysuckle Rose' and 'Ain't Misbehavin'.' His contemporaries formed a Who''s Who of jazz greats, from Louis Armstrong to Razaf's most noted collaborator, Thomas 'Fats' Waller. Razaf brought a sensitivity and sophistication to his lyrics that ensure the timelessness of his best work. The poignant 'Black and Blue,' dealing with the plight of being Black in a white world, may be the first racial protest song." (Library Journal) Illustrated with photographs. Notes, songs, discography, index. xvii, 444 pp. Near fine in near fine dust jacket (a bit of light discoloration to outer edges of back of textblock.).

Albert Barbelle (illustratore). This is a rare piece of sheet music, for Piano and Ukulele and/or Banjo. It is S'posin', a ballad fox trot written by Andy Razaf and Paul Denniker, and published by Joe Davis and Triangle Music in 1929. It has been recorded numerous times, including by Frank Sinatra, Fats Waller, Perry Como, Frankie Laine, Etta Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Robert Goulet and Dean Martin. The ukulele arrangements are by May Singhi Breen. Inside, there's music for Tell Me There's Hope for Me, by Howard Johnson and Joe Davis, also with the ukulele arrangement by May Singhi Breen. On the back, there's music for Perhaps, which I also have listed here. The featured band on the cover is the Landt Trio and Howard White. The Landt Trio was one of the busiest singing groups in early radio. In 1928, the three brothers, Karl (1908-1997), Jack (1911-1959), and Dan (1896-1961) Landt, with their accompanist Howard White, were signed onto the NBC Blue Network as sustaining artists and began a career of more than 20 years. They performed primarily on radio but also performed in vaudeville, including some headline runs at the Palace and Carnegie Hall, and made many personal appearances. They continued to perform on radio and in advertising until the early 1950s, when television ended their performance career. Paul Denniker was a pianist, singer and bandleader whose work became more famous when it was recorded by Miles Davis and Fats Waller, among other jazz greats. There is more known about Razaf, who wrote some of the greatest hits from the Tin Pan Alley era, including "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Honeysuckle Rose", "In the Mood", "Stompin' at the Savoy", "Memories of You", "12th Street Rag", "Black and Blue", "Make Believe Ballroom", "Christopher Columbus", "Milkman's Matinee", Concentratin' On You", "You're Lucky to Me", "Porter's Love Song","Knock Me a Kiss", "Dusky Stevedore", "My Special Friend", "That's What I Like"Bout the South", "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now", "Blue Turning Gray Over You", "Shoutin' in the Amen Corner", "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You?", "On Revival Day", "Stealing Apples", "How Can You Face Me?", "Massachusetts", "My Handy Man", "My Fate is in Your Hands", "The Joint is Jumpin'", "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town", "If It Ain't Love", "The Burning Bush of Israel", "Am I My Brother's Keeper?", "Seeds of Brotherhood" and "Precious Rosary." He died in 1930 and was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1972. 4 pages of music, plus cover and samples, 9 1/4" x 12 1/4". The piece is larger than the scanner. Artwork signed by the famed Tin Pan Alley illustrator Albert Barbelle. Superb condition, with a tiny bit of wear at the edges. If you want to frame it, any flaws can be masked or repaired by the framer. NOTE: I have a lot of sheet music listed here. Contact me if you'd like to buy more than one piece and combine shipping.
