Hard Cover. Condizione: BOOK NEAR FINE. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dustjacket. 1st Edition. 43 pages. An extremely clean, attractive copy of Archibald Rutledge's elusive first book. Rarely seen for sale, this book is usually found in libraries and private collections. The title lettering is in gilt on the cover. The cover itself is in very nice condition and shows little wear. The interior is extremely clean and some of the pages are still unopened. The previous owner's name and date are on the front endpaper. Rutledge is author of dozens of books about hunting and is perhaps most well known as South Carolina's most beloved poet laureate. His former home, Hampton Plantation, is a state operated park and is open to the public. Rutledge's notable descendents to name only a couple include two former South Carolina governors (his grandfathers) and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. During his career he had conferred on him twenty honorary degrees and more than thirty medals for nature writing. His portrait hangs in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Dr. Rutledge continues to be one of the South's most beloved and respected authors.

Soft Cover. Condizione: BOOK VERY GOOD. 1st Edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE PAGE. 164 pages. Rutledge's earliest book and perhaps the rarest. This seldom seen title is in very nice condition. Blue, suede like cover has some light wear but is in overall nice condition. No previous owner markings. This exceedly rare Rutledge title is undated but stated as being published in 1904 in a book by Joseph Flora. This would make this Rutledge's true first book as Under the Pines was not published until 1906. Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Charles Livingston Bull (illustratore). First Edition. this is the privately printed eddy press edition of old plantation days privately published by mr rutledge in, i believe 1913 as a christmas present. this is the rarest and earliest version of old plantation days. no one seems to know how many copies were printed but i have heard speculation of between 100 and 250 copies. this copy has a minor repair to head and heel of the spine and the endpapers have been replaced. this edition contains 18 stories. 13 of them appear in the first trade edition listed elsewhere. 5 of the stories appear only in the 1913 privately printed edition.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Privately Printed. Octavo. 160 pages. Frontispiece illustration and one illustrated plate in text by Charles L. Bull. Gray paper covered boards with black lettered title on the front cover. Green cloth spine with title at the head. Front and rear hinges have thin cracks. Edge wear to the boards. Light shelf wear to the cloth spine. A 3" closed tear bottom of page 67. Previous owner's name written at top of the blank recto of the frontispiece illustration. Signed by Archibald Rutledge bottom of the same page. A couple of light finger smudges also on the page. Contents are a series of articles for various publications including Outing Magazine, The Youth's Companion, The American Boy's Magazine, and The Black Cat. 5 of these stories did not make it into the 1921 edition. A good copy. Scarce. 8 copies in OCLC. OCLC Entry 19760130; OCLC Accession Number 1954885. It is unclear when this book was actually published. There are no printing dates associated with this book. Auction records not found for editions prior to 1921. 1913 has been stated as the first edition because some of the inscribed copies have the date of 1913 written inside. This private publication was supposedly limited to 500 copies but some believe only 100-200 copies were printed for family and friends. Wikipedia page states Old Plantation Days was printed in 1907. A search of OCLC (Worldcat) claims the book was actually published in 1905. From OCLC: "According to a 1972 exchange of letters between the author and Mrs. Paul Smith, of the Old Book Corner, Chapel Hill, N.C., this edition of "Old plantation days" was published in 1905 in an edition of 500 copies. The letters were laid in the copy of the book acquired by the University of Virginia". Archibald Rutledge (1883-1973) was 88 or 89 years old when the correspondence between Mrs. Paul Smith from Chapel Hill occurred.
