This book explores the complexities of protecting man-made structures built in the sea from attacks by marine borers, a major threat to the integrity of wooden piers, pilings and ships. The author was commissioned by the National Research Council to draw together the expertise of scientists from various fields in order to approach the problem from a holistic perspective. This book does not focus on one particular borer or solution, but instead examines the bigger picture including water analysis, biological surveys, and the use of substitutes for timber, most notably concrete. The result is a comprehensive investigation that provides readers with critical information regarding the scale of the problem and offers a practical examination of effective preventative measures. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
