Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Da: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Ernest Fosbery (illustratore). This is the novel, "Prudence Palfrey", bound with the short story "A Rivermouth Romance", both by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. It is Volume IV from the Collected Works of Mr. Aldrich, and was issued by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1907. The book is graced with a frontispiece which is a handsome photogravure portrait of Aldrich, (after the photograph by Marshall taken in 1875). There are four lovely photogravure reproductions of drawings by Ernest Fosbery; these are particularly well-executed, with sharp details which reveal the skill of the artist. Fosbery was an esteemed Canadian artist. In his day Thomas Bailey Aldrich was one of the most popular authors in America. He was also a long time editor of "The Atlantic" magazine. Through his literary contacts he was friends with and familiar with a great many other authors. He was a close friend of Mark Twain, who was influenced somewhat in "Tom Sawyer" by Aldrich's semi-autobiographical work, "The Story of a Bad Boy". Twain also lent editorial assistance to Aldrich for "Prudence Palfrey". "Prudence Palfrey" deals with the romantic aspirations of the book's heroine, Prudence, who resides in Rivermouth, a staid New England village. It also deals, quite excellently, with an array of amusing New England characters, who are well-drawn and typify various stereotypes of New England gentry. Aldrich has a genial style, and his gentle, yet dry humor permeates the story. What is the story? Well, Mr. Dent, the owner of a brewery, had asked a young woman to marry him, was rejected, only to find she had married his bookkeeper. The two travel to the Caribbean, the husband dies, she gives birth (to Prudence) travels back to Rivermouth , where she dies, leaving the child Prudence as the ward of Mr. Dent. Dent dotes on the girl, and all his energies are bent to insure her comfort. This is all background. Skip ahead some years, and Prudence is a lovely young woman. She has a suitor, of whom Mr. Dent does not approve. The town has grown weary of the old minister, who has become somewhat doddery. They search for a replacement. A dashing young southerner, with affairs in Canada and the North appears in town. Seems according to him that he has been trained for the ministry, yet has been traveling, avoiding the south, with whose racial policies he disagrees. Unknown to all he has a dark past in which thievery and murder are a part. But he charms the village, charms Prudence, and ascends into the pulpit, where his sonorous voice further charms the village. The stage is set.
