Bound by Zaehnsdorf in later 19th century half brown morocco and marbled paper over boards, gilt lettering on spine, marbled endpapers. Zaehnsdorf Company bookplate on front pastedown. Small library stamp at top margin of page one. The page margins are moderately soiled, very good. A pair of two long admired satirical works on book collecting of the day. ?A Dialogue in the Shades? is attributed to English novelist William Beckford, author of the Gothic novel *Vathek*. ?A Ballad entitled Rare Doings at Roxburghe-Hall? (printed by J.F. Dove), was authored by London bookseller William Clarke. Claude Cox, in his introduction to the 1985 reprint of both pamphlets, identifies the three men in the engraving as William Beckford, William Clarke, and William Caxton. A beautifully bound copy by Zaehnsdorf.
