of Wm. Penn's wife, Gulielma. With an Account of the Life of Gulielma Maria Springett Penn, 1644-1694. York (PA), 1966. George Shumway. vi + 213pp. Orange cloth with red imprint, fine in near fine dj. Decorative red page borders top and bottom, and a few b/w illus. William Penn's first wife, Guli, kept a hand-written book of family recipes handed down from her mother and grandmother. In 1702, a manuscript copy was made and brought to America for use in the Penn household. This extensive collection of recipes, set in modern type but retaining the original spelling and word usage (obsolete words are defined in footnotes to the recipes), provides an intimate glimpse of the workings of a 17th century kitchen. Postpaid.
