Condizione: Muy bueno. In 1946 Norma Jean Baker sat for her first photographic session ever, taken by Sunset Boulevard photographer Bruno Bernard. For the next 17 years Bernard became her confidante and father-confessor as the naive and shy child-woman became the vivacious Marilyn Monroe. This is a collection of his photographs of Monroe, many of them previously unpublished, from her earliest days to the zenith of her screen career. They are accompanied by text by Bernard's daughter. Bernard, who escaped to America from Nazi Germany, died in 1987. He achieved fame for his portraits of Hollywood stars, and in 1984 was honoured by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with a 50-year retrospective of his work. Softcover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition Thus. [tiny bump to bottom right corner of front cover, otherwise virtually as-new]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) A new, trilingual edition (text in English, French and German) of a "how-to" book on pin-up photography by the guy who virtually invented the technique, originally published by him under his own imprint in 1950, under the title "Pin-Ups: A Step Beyond." (The rear cover photo depicts a relaxed and bemused Robert Mitchum perusing a copy of the original publication.) Bruno Bernard (1912-1987) was a German-born emigre who only took up photography shortly after arriving in Los Angeles (fleeing Nazi Germany) in 1937. Although he had no formal training in photography, he gained a reputation during the 1940s for his "posed candid" style of photographing beautiful actresses (including a young Marilyin Monroe), and eventually started billing himself as Bernard of Hollywood. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.

First Edition. Signed by the author Bernard Gordon and inscribed: ÒTo Bebe & Leonard, old friends, good friends forever. Love, BernieÓ. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The publisher writes about the book: ÒThe Hollywood blacklist, which began in the late 1940s and ran well into the 1960s, ended or curtailed the careers of hundreds of people accused of having ties to the Communist Party. Bernard Gordon was one of them. In this highly readable memoir, he tells a engrossing insiderÕs story of what it was like to be blacklisted and how he and others continued to work uncredited behind the scenes, writing and producing many box office hits of the era. Gordon describes how the blacklist cut short his screenwriting career in Hollywood and forced him to work in Europe. Ironically, though, his is a success story that includes the films El Cid, 55 Days at Peking, The Thin Red Line, Krakatoa East of Java, Day of the Triffids, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, Horror Express, and many others. He recounts the making of many movies for which he was the writer and/or producer, with wonderful anecdotes about stars such as Charlton Heston, David Niven, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, and James Mason; directors Nicholas Ray, Frank Capra, and Anthony Mann; and the producerÐstudio head team of Philip Yordan and Samuel BronstonÓ. The book is in fine condition.

ÓMollie Gregory is a dear friend who encouraged me to write about life in those interesting times, insisting that a personal account of the blacklist and filmmaking abroad would be a unique and valued documentation of a significant era. She got me started, kept my feet to the fire, criticized edited, supported. She also nurtured me through the travail of using a computer, spending endless hours cleaning up my computerized messes.
