First editions. This set includes two of the main resources for the work of influential American etcher, engraver, and printmaker, Helen Hyde (1868-1919); one being the first such publication, and the other being the more comprehensive and recent standard. Hyde spent extended periods in Japan, mastering color woodcut techniques and developing her distinctive, East-West blended style. In this style, she often depicted women and children in tender scenes with technical refinement and delicate color. Hyde influenced future generations by elevating this color woodblock technique in America, and helping her achieve this was her friend and fellow artist, Bertha Jaques (1863-1941) who marketed her prints in the U.S. Jaques published this first survey of Hyde's work, including an appreciation, a few years after her death in 1919. Hyde's sister and brother in law, Mabel Hyde and Edwin F. Gillette were in charge of her estate and preserved her works, records, diaries, etc. and also began the task of dating and identifying her prints. This copy of Jaques' booklet is a testament to those efforts and is marked "dated copy." Interestingly, at least one other of these annotated copies from Gillette exists at the University of Oregon Knight Library, though at least a few of the entries are different. A lovely association copy, and a very important reference. Also included in this set is the newer, standard resource for Hyde's prints by Tim and Lynn Mason, which presumably drew upon these dated references from Gillette. In all, a unique and beautiful grouping with tangible ties to the life and work of the highly original American woman printmaker. . 2 publications, the first 21x13cm, 46, [1]pp with a single frontis illustration. Annotated and with entries dated throughout by Edwin F. Gillette, and signed by him on the title page. Staple bound in publisher's gray wraps with silver emblem on front cover. Wraps edge chipped, spine creased and toned. Clean internally and very good. The second publication perfect bound in illustrated card wrappers, 120pp, color and black and white reproductions throughout. Near fine condition with list of prints on offer and a ms. note from Mason, initialed "T.M.". Signed.

A review published in 1912 in 'The Common Cause' magazine called Bertha Mason's book 'a concise history of the leading events of the history of Women's Suffrage'. Alongside books by Helen Blackburn and Millicent Fawcett, 'The Story of the Women's Suffrage Movement' is regarded as an official account of the Suffragist movement, focusing on a slow, continuous progression towards victory which neglects to mention some of the conflictual issues. Universal women's suffrage was encoded in law in the UK in 1928.
