Paperback. Condizione: VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Very nice clean copy. The vivid colors of Lisa Bradley's large canvases, often deep blues against which are set whites, greys, and blacks in constant movement, have about them a spirituality that moves the viewer deeply. While our first reaction may be to think them abstract, the life of the mind and soul may be conveyed best by symbol, by visual gestures that express what is true to the artist. "Ultimate reality," wrote the theologian Paul Tillich, "underlies every reality, and it characterizes the whole appearing world as non-ultimate, preliminary, transitory and finite."1 Ultimate reality is precisely what Bradley seeks to show in her work, which is about the consciousness that she knows to be real. In an extremely perceptive introduction to a catalogue of her paintings shown at the E.M. Donahue Gallery in 1989, Ronny Cohen wrote that: These paintings, filled as they are with what might be described as inner purpose, derived their particularly animated appearance from Bradley's needs and desires to use art as a means of getting at certain basic truths. As a group, these paintings speak to and about what might be termed a transcendent order of experience. The mode of discourse is uncompromisingly pure and astonishingly poetic.2 About art in more general terms, Tillich wrote that the arts "open up a dimension of reality which is otherwise hidden, and they open up our own being for receiving this reality. =.
