Upon arriving at Mono Lake, Browne grew ecstatic about the attractiveness of the area. He commented later: "Here the traveler, whether artist, geologist, botanist or poet, might spend many months, and find ample occupation for every hour of his time." For an account of his brief visit to Mono Lake, see J. Ross Brown, "A Trip to Bodie Bluff and the Dead Sea of the West, Harper's Monthly, XXXI August-September 1865, 274-87; 411-19. Includes a map of the "Routes of J. Ross Browne to the Mining Districts 1860-1865" drawn by Bob Clark, p. [162]. "An excellent study of one of the notable nineteenth-century frontiersmen of the American West . Mr. Goodman portrays Browne as a man of action as well as a writer; and he carefully documents the interrelationships between Browne's wanderlust, his desire to build a literary reputation, and his dedication as a public servant ." (American West). "Goodman's research on Browne is excellent. His bibliography on Browne is the best so far and may well be definitive" (The Colorado Magazine). "The author's extensive research and assessment of Browne's complex career is outstanding. His voluminous footnotes are informative as well as reference guides" (Texana). A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. Prospectus laid in. (#166287).
