A handsome set. ~ This uncommon edition was published in Brussels simultaneously with the Paris edition. In the mid 19th century the national campaign for literacy and historical knowledge in France mandated an increasing reliance on illustrated texts. Théodose Burette's "Histoire de France" is a fine example for enabling the past to "speak for itself" through the union of the text with more than 500 illustrations by Jules David, "that other historian, the illustrator". Burettes and David's groundbreaking work would influence historical narration and illustration for the next thirty years, to the "histoires populaires" of Henri Martin and Victor Duruy in the Second Empire.
