Dietrich Wilhelm Heinrich Busch was one of the most famous professors of obstetrics in Germany in the first half of the 19th century. He was born March 16, 1788 in Marburg in Kurhessen. He came from a family of professors. His grandfather Johann David Busch (born 1755) and father Johann Jacob Busch (1727-1786) worked as professors of medicine at the University of Marburg. Busch pursued and completed his studies in his hometown and received his doctorate on June 4, 1808 by his own father. Already earlier, from November 1806 to August 1807, he had voluntarily served as a doctor in a French military hospital (Lazaretto) and also in a Polish Legion hospital from December 1807 to March 1808. He was part of Baron von Dörnberg?s conspiracy to revolt against foreign rule. The conspiracy betrayed, nipped in the bud, and several participants were seized and shot, among them Busch's friend Professor Sternberg. Busch hid until he was granted amnesty, because he had served voluntarily in military hospitals. From then on he served continuously in French-Westphalian lazaretts until October 1813, when Russian troops moved in and the ephemeral Kingdom of Westphalia disappeared from the map. He then took over the Russian Lazareth. January 1814 he was appointed Generalfeldmedicus with the general staff (highest field doctor) of the Hessian army corps moving into the field. Returned from the campaign in December 1814, he was appointed professor extraordinary and as such gave lectures on surgery. When, after Napoleon's return from Elba to Paris, the torch of war began to flare up again, he moved into the field with the Hessian troops. Eventually he was finally able to devote himself continuously to his academic career. In 1817 he married, became professor, turned away from surgery and devoted himself to obstetrics. In 1829 he was appointed professor of obstetrics and head of the obstetric clinic in Berlin. Most of Busch?s smaller works appeared in the journal "Zeitschrift für Natalskunde" (1825-1834) edited by him in association with MENDE in Göttingen and RlTGEN in Giessen, as well as in the journals "Neue Zeitschrift für Geburtskunde" (1834-1853) and "monthsschrift für geburtskunde "(1853-1869), which he was involved in editing until his death.
