    Hardback. Blue cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, 12mo, 203 pp. Signed by the author on ffep and dated Christmas 1920. With a notation below the signing stating that the author was a family friend. Byers (1838-1933) was raised in Iowa and studied the law. When the Civil War started he enlisted in the Fifth Iowa Infantry, was captured at the Battle of Chattanooga, and spent 16 months in several prison camps, escaping three times. Byers wrote the poem "Sherman's March To The Sea" while a prisoner. After the war, he served as United States Consul to Zurich, and was the last surviving member of the Fifth Iowa when he died in 1933. Book condition Poor/Fair, with water damage to the covers causing staining and warping. Text block tight with pages unmarked. Moisture damage limited to covers and blank endpapers. Binding: Hardback.
