Half Calf - Marbled Boards. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Frank Marryat (illustratore). 1st Edition. 1847 First edition, first printing, not dated. Complete in two volumes. Size 16mo, 6.25" tall, 288 and 298 then 4 pages of reviews of Captain Marryat's work. Black half calf over marbled boards, with four gilt decoration raised bands to each spine, tan calf and gilt titles labels in the second compartments, brown paste-downs and end-papers. Title pages are printed in red and green. Condition good, bindings are rubbed at corners and edges and on the raised bands to the spine, the title labels are rubbed, more so on volume 1 than volume 2. The pages with the plates on are quite spotted, there are a few spots to the first and last 16 or so pages in each volume, all pages are a bit toned. Each volume contains 4 full page engravings by Frank Marryat. The very first and second volumes ever produced under the Series Title of The Juvenile Library. The Children of the New Forest is set in the time of the English Civil War story follows the fortunes of the four Beverley children who are orphaned during the war, and hide from the Roundhead oppressors in the shelter of the New Forest where they learn to live off the land.
