Pinocchio is presented here in the first US edition with colored plates but a piracy of the original with no attribution to Collodi. Even the title was changed to suggest a different story but, it is indeed the familiar tale first published in English six years earlier. It has been suggested that the title was changed not only to conceal the piracy but also to capitalize on the popularity of Alice in Wonderland. The illustrations are dated 1899. .

Carlo Lorenzini (1826 - 1890) was a prolific journalist, playwright and novelist who adopted Collodi as his pen-name from the name of his childhood village in Tuscany. He was an adherent of the Risorgimento movement which achieved the unification of Italy in 1860 and he became involved in the administration and especially education in the region of Florence. In this capacity he was involved in translating and writing didactic works for the youth of the "New Italy." He launched a weekly magazine for children in 1881, in which he began weekly installments of "The Story of a Puppet". First edition thus. Scarce first printing of this Dutch edition of PINOCCHIO, illustrated by one of the most significant children's book artists of the interwar years. Rie Cramer is widely regarded as one of "de bekendste vrouwen van de Nederlandse boekillustratie" ["the most famous women in Dutch book illustration"] (Groot, 307), drawing comparisons to Aubrey Beardsley and Edmund Dulac. Her work for this Dutch translation of the beloved puppet story shows her fully developed aesthetic. This edition of PINOCCHIO is notably scarce on the market and institutionally, especially in the original dust jacket; OCLC locates only seven holdings, six of which are in the Netherlands and none of which are in the US. An attractive copy. 10'' x 6.75''. Original yellow pictorial cloth binding. Original unclipped (no price) pictorial dust jacket. Green endpapers. Color pictorial frontispiece with three color plates and black-and-white in-text illustrations. 174 pages. Jacket with some edgewear, a few tiny closed tears; small hole to rear joint, partly closed with tape repair to verso. Binding with faint evidence of dampstaining to boards. Interior clean and bright. Very good in very good dust jacket.

Bright color illustrated boards, well protected by the DJ, which is the same design. Bright color illustrated endpapers. Of particular novelty is the first pop-up which shows Pinocchio reading a book with pages that open. Some tiny spotted foxing on preliminaries and a few leaves elsewhere have these speck-sized spots but overall text and plates very clean. One pop-up has minor surface paper rawness in corner, not affecting pictorial. One pop-up had small tear now repaired. Evidence of clumsy repair to spine using glue in narrow brown stain on upper and lower foreedge by the spine. Book now tight and tightened. Tape was also used in this earlier repair by spine in a few pages; now only light inobtrusive evidence of such. Some tape in DJ edge. Still very rare for book to have surviving DJ! Overall, VG in all respects.

Hardcover. First Edition in this Format. Book condition is Good, bound in color pictorial paper-covered boards. Toning, foxing, chipping and edge wear to exterior. All pop-up illustrations are in good order and not missing pieces. Book overall is fragile to handle, spine may crack with use. Text is clean and unmarked, illustrated throughout. 8vo. 8 3/4"h x 6 1/2"w.
