Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Fine unread condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Author Dedication; Preface: Devil Take the Hindmost; Epilogue: The Case of the Rogue Economists; Notes; For Further Reference; Acknowledgments; and Index. A New York Times Notable Book of the Year. "Devil Take the Hindmost is a lively, original, and challenging history of stock market speculation from the seventeenth century to the present day. Edward Chancellor traces the origins of the speculative spirit back to ancient Rome and chronicles its revival in the modern world: from the tulip scandal of 1630s Holland, to "stockjobbing" in London's Exchange Alley (where wine sold at auction by an "inch of a candle"), to the infamous South Sea Bubble of 1720, which prompted investor Sir Isaac Newton to comment, "I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people." Here are brokers underwriting risks that included highway robbery and the "assurance of female chastity"; credit notes and lottery tickets circulating as money; wise and unwise investors from Alexander Pope and Benjamin Disraeli to Ivan Boesky and Hillary Rodham Clinton. From the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties, from the nineteenth-century railway mania to the crash of 1929, from junk bonds and the Japanese bubble economy to the day-traders of the Information Era, Devil Take the Hindmost tells a fascinating story of human dreams and folly through the ages." - from the rear outer cover. "The greatest hits of financial silliness recounted coherently and gracefully .Chancellor does a fine job of captureing the atmosphere of the times." - Fortune magazine. "Entertaining, useful, admirable scholarship. Chancellor seems to have read everything." - Adam Smith, The New York Times Book Review.

Condizione: New. Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Jacket by Edward Bettison (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with '1' on copyright page. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, price clipped, no inscriptions, rear endpaper and spine torn away from main body of page block, rear endpaper missing, internally page block tight and clean, overall a disappointing copy. 250pp, lavishly illustrated. For nearly 80 years, the Bond novels have entertained millions around the world. 007 has been a cultural phenomenon since the first publication of Casino Royale in 1953. But no book has celebrated Fleming's literary Bond in his own right. This is an authoritative and entertaining journey through the world of the original James Bond, from Moscow to Mayfair, the bedroom to the war-room, the casino to the villain's lair. Ian Fleming's archive has released never-before seen documents and material to create this book. Sources include research notes and diaries to annotated manuscripts and ephemera from Fleming's files. Illustrated with classy, contemporary images, the book is a visual feast, but it is also engaging, with a rigorous and satisfying text. It recaptures the glamour of an age, and offers a new insight into the twentieth century's most thrilling literary hero. Quite a scarce book, despite condition.

See the two men s entries in the Oxford DNB. Plain postcard, with stamp printed in red. In fair condition, discoloured and worn. Addressed by Gore to W. D. Ross Esq / 6 Charlbery Road / Oxford . Begins: Will you forgive a p. c.? I have no secretary & am rather overwhelmed with applications. You may not know that I did the thing you suggest at the meeting for Oxford House in Magd. Hall last summer. But besides this I must respectfully say that I cannot undertake any more work than I have already on hand up to next Easter. Forgive me. I have the best will. / Charles Gore . The subject of the letter is presumably the Oxford House Anglican settlement in Bethnal Green.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged grey paper. He notes an advertisement for Campbell's 'Lives of the Chief Justices' in that morning's Athenaeum. 'Had I been earlier aware of the preparation of the work it would have afforded me much pleasure in offering for your Lordships acceptance a Copy of the probate Copy Will of the Lord Chief Justice Fitzjames which I have in my collection of M.S.S. &c.' The will is very long and contains 'much curious matter'. Although it may be too late for any notice of the will in Campbell's book, 'yet a copy shall be very much at your Lordships service, should your Lordship desire to possess it'. A postscript reads 'I sometime ago sent a Copy to Mr Foss. [i.e. Edward Foss, author of the 'Judges of England']'.
