First Edition. "BELL, Charles. The Anatomy of the Brain, Explained in a Series of Engravings. BOUND WITH: A Series of Engravings, Explaining the Course of the Nerves. London: Printed by C. Whittingham for T.N. Longman et. al., 1802, 1803. Tall quarto (9-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches), contemporary three-quarter brown calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spine and red and black morocco spine labels laid down, marbled boards, endpapers and edges; [i-v] vi-vii, [1-3] 4-87 [1]; [4] [1-3] 4-49 [3]. $17,500.First editions of two seminal early works by Scottish surgeon Bell Anatomy of the Brain (1802) and Series of Engravings (1803), with Anatomy wonderfully illustrated with 12 stipple-engraved anatomical plates (11 hand-colored) -"engraved by Thomas Medland after Bell's own drawings probably Bell's most beautiful work on neuroanatomy and one of the most beautifully illustrated in the entire literature" and nine copper-engraved plates (three folding) in Series of Engravings, all after richly detailed and expressive original drawings by Bell, a splendid volume in contemporary calf and marbled boards. This volume brings together two exceptional early works by Scottish-born surgeon Sir Charles Bell Anatomy of the Brain (1802) and Series of Engravings (1803). "Trained in art as well as medicine," Bell crafted beautiful anatomical drawings in connection with lectures by his brother John Bell (Norman 168). Moving to London in 1804, Bell "developed his experimental techniques involving the peripheral nerves in order to discover how the brain functions Bell introduced new methods of determining the functional anatomy of the nervous system His techniques and observations led to Johannes Müller's generalizations on the sensory functions of the nervous system" (DSB). In Anatomy of the Brain, Bell "displays both his descriptive and artistic capabilities. The 12 aquatint plates (eleven of them hand-colored) were engraved by Thomas Medland after Bell's own drawings and constitute what is probably Bell's most beautiful work on neuroanatomy and one of the most beautifully illustrated in the entire literature" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1297). Plate I in Anatomy is especially "important for its accurate portrayal of the cerebral gyri," and the nine plates in Series of Engravings are exquisite renderings of the body's nerves, muscles, arteries and veins (Norman 168). "Bell s great discovery was that there are two kinds of nerves, sensory and motor," and his "systems of anatomy, dissections and surgery still stand unrivaled for facility of expression, elegance of style and accuracy of description" (DNB; Chouland, 343). In Anatomy, "Plates I-X were engraved in colors as well as colored by hand" (Norman 168). Series of Engravings with nine copper-engraved plates, including three large folding plates, that reveal the body's nerves, muscles, arteries and veins. All plates after original drawings by Bell. Series bound without rear leaf of ads. Norman 168, 169. Bookplate of American naval physician Dr. I.H. Hazelton, who served in the Civil War aboard the U.S.S. Vermont.Text and plates fresh with light scattered foxing; mild rubbing, edge-wear to boards, expert restoration to contemporary calf corners.".

First edition. Octavo (). [1]-414 pp. With a full color fontispiece of the Dalai Lama at age thirty-four and numerous full-page black and white photographs throughout. With maps printed on the endpapers. Publisher's original orange cloth. Front board stamped in gilt. Spine lettered and stamped in gilt. Minor stain to front board. Binding slightly skewed. Jacket chipped and creased a bit along edges and spine extremities. Jacket a bit dust soiled and with some tape repairs on the inside bottom of spine. Overall a very good copy. "For more than twenty years the late Sir Charles Bell, acting as the Dali Lama's political adviser, was in a unique position to study him as a man, as a ruler, and as the head of a religion permeating the lives of many millions of people. It is an authoritative book, teeming with interest and detailed information, and as the central figure of the King-Priest emerges, so also does the astonishing background of the country and people which he ruled- the splendid mountainous scenery, the way of life and curious customs of the inhabitants, the amazing fortress-palace of the Dalai Lama on the Potala Hill and, above all, the little-known and ancient religious beliefs and practices of the country. Sir Charles Bell wrote much about Tibet, and it is fitting that this book, completed shortly before his death, should be, the most notable of his literary achievements." (From the front flap). Attractive full calf, gilt spine, raised bands, contrasting label, all edges gilt, by J. Clarke, with his small stamp to verso of fly-leaf. Edges of boards very slightly rubbed, frontis a little foxed, but very good clean condition overall. Armorial bookplate of Charles Henry Edward Fortnum, book label of Charles Francis Bell. BOUND WITH a manuscript one-page note of Dr Parr by Charles Francis Bell dated 1899, plus several more pages of extracts concerning him. Bell writes Bought at the sale of Dr Fortnum s Book. Dr Parr, the intimate friend of my great-grandfather, the Rev. Edward Forster and of his father Dr Nathaniel Forster of Colchester, lived from 1771 to 1776 in a house which stood on part of the ground later belonging to Hill House, Stanmore, in which lived and died Dr Fortnum, the patron and friend under whose auspices I entered the service of the University of Oxford. Bell goes on to explain that he arranged Fortnum s bequest in the Ashmolean, leaving it to his successor Sir Kenneth Clark, and the University sold the land left to them by Fortnum without waiting for it to appreciate, as it did subsequently greatly. A striking, multiple association, and a most interesting little work. Charles Francis Bell (1871-1966) was made head of the Fine Art Department of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford in 1909. Amongst the close friends of his circle were Arthur Evans, Berenson and Sitwell, and he is regarded as being the patron of Kenneth Clark. A discrete homosexual, he was regarded as being one of the most learned of all art historians, and supremely well-connected.
